Elliot Eisenberg | May 1 2026, 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.“Survival to Success: The Leader’s Shifting Mindset” Workshop
Peter Brooks & Gerry Starsia | April 30 2026Drawing on insights from the recently released book titled: Survival to Success: Leading Small, High-Growth Enterprises, authors Peter Brooks and Gerry Starsia will lead a discussion exploring the unique leadership challenges faced by founders and small business leaders as they shift from “survival mode” to sustainable growth. A transition that demands not only strategic adaptation but also a profound evolution in mindset and leadership style.
Key themes from the book will be used to compare and contrast the leadership dynamics of small, fast-growth firms with those of larger, more established organizations. We’ll examine how the entrepreneurial skills essential for launching a company—such as resourcefulness, multitasking, and crisis response—differ markedly from the capabilities required to scale it, including:
• Building and communicating a compelling external narrative
• Developing internal leadership capacity and staff
• Delegating effectively and designing scalable systemsIn this highly interactive session, the presenters will take a few minutes to overview the themes mentioned above, including how leading small, high-growth firms differs from larger, more established ones, and then provide the context for a case study and report out exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question not answered? Email us or call the VACEOs office at 804-360-2644
Does my membership include entry into the retreat/what does registration include?
Yes. As a benefit of your membership, you are invited to this special yearly event where members have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn and connect with national keynote speakers and through various workshops. (And have some fun too!) Meals and program from Wednesday evening to Friday morning and special receptions are also included for members.
Membership does not include hotel rooms/expenses or recreation activities on Wednesday.
Do I need to book a room?
Yes. As soon as possible! We have a block of rooms reserved through April 7, with the majority being at the Marriott. Use this special group link, also found in your confirmation, to make your reservation. Book your room, starting April 29 for two nights or more.
What about guests?
We offer guest tickets for our evening social receptions/dinners. Some members also choose to extend their stay and have a plus one join them for an extra night or two of rest and relaxation before or after the program. However, the programming itself is designed for members and sponsors only.
Is there a dress code?
Not really. Let’s call it business casual or resort casual. Relax and be comfortable. We recommend layers for fluctuating meeting room temperatures.
I've arrived, now what?
When you arrive Wednesday, make your way to any group activity you’ve registered for, or take advantage of resort amenities. We will have snacks and cornhole for a relaxed welcome at our registration area on the second floor starting at 2:00 pm.
Parking is attached to the Marriott, and you can leave your luggage in your car until your room is ready (check in begins at 4:00 pm typically, but your room could be ready earlier. Call the hotel 757-937-4200 to confirm).
If you arrive Thursday morning, we will officially welcome you at the Retreat registration desk located on the second floor, beginning at 8:00 am.
So, VACEOs is a “Safe Haven” for members. What does that really mean?
It means that when a member attends a VACEOs event, they are assured that they are entering a room full of peers who are instantly on a “first name” basis. Members expect to meet other members and sponsors they can trust, who are interested in sharing experiences and knowledge.
We are not a traditional networking organization. Relationships come first in VACEOs. If business opportunities arise as a result of these relationships, great! One member summed it up this way: “I don’t sell anything to other VACEOs members. Some of them buy from me because they know me and trust me.”
